10 Tri-Cities restaurants, coffee shops and others fail their food safety inspections

Jan. 12—The Benton Franklin Health District gave failing grades in 10 inspections of restaurants and other businesses that sell food and drinks for the week of Dec. 31 to Jan. 6.
In the 81 inspections conducted, the district's food safety team awarded 28 perfect scores, including to restaurants, coffee shops and school cafeterias.
In the district's routine inspections, businesses or organizations that receive 35 points for the more serious red violations are required to have additional inspections and must meet a tougher standard on those.
They must have fewer than 25 red points and a limited number of repeat problems to pass followup inspections.
On Jan. 4, Sammy's Meat Market in Pasco was told to close its meat department because its handwashing sink had not been properly repaired and water was draining into a bucket. It had fixed the issue and had a perfect score on a followup inspection a day later.
The Tri-Cities-based health district has ramped up food inspections as fewer resources have been needed for the COVID-19 pandemic.
Inspection results are posted online so residents can look up the status and any violations of individual restaurants.
